Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, VR, 1036 Pte T. Wilkes, Shropshire Light Infantry. 

 

Thomas Wilks was born in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland during 1846.

 

He enlisted for service with the 85th Foot on 29th December 1865.

During his service he spent most of his time in the East Indies from 30th January 1868 until 8th March 1881.

In this period he was engaged in the Afghanistan Campaign of 1878-80 earning the medal.

He had been posted to Natal on 9th March 1881 for service in the First Boer War but did not see action at the peace was declared on 23rd March, returning home after many years abroad on 7th December 1881.

In 1881 the 85th Regiment amalgamated with the 35th to form the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry.

 

Papers record he was awarded this medal during July 1884.

 

Having served for over 21 years he claimed his discharge at Currah on 8th March 1887.
