Description
Brunswick Waterloo 1815, Friedrich Hornburg, Leib Battalion (Life Guards)
An interesting medal to the Leib Battalion, who were the Brunswick Life Guard Cavalry, they were heavily involved in the battle for Quatre Bras and particularly distinguished themselves, previously members of the Black Brunswickers who had developed a fearsome reputation since they were formed in 1809 by the Duke.
The Leib Battalion was formed of what was left of the Cavalry Veterans from the infamous ‘Black Legion’ who had suffered many casualties during the war leading up to Waterloo, the Leib Battalion was one of the only units under the Duke’s command who had seen prior action and were hardened by battle, the remainder of the Brunswick Corps were brand new recruits and had never seen battle.
