Description

British War and Victory Medal Pair, 144594 Private John Brown Marshall, Machine Gun Corps.

Officially impressed: “144594 Pte J.B. Marshall. M.G.C.”

Mr John Brown Marshall served during the First World War with the Machine Gun Corps, earning these 2 medals only.

The medal award rolls note he was at one time a Transport Corporal.

After the end of the war he was discharged to the Army Reserve Class Z on 3rd September 1919.

There are some surviving service records for a John Brown Marshall, of Chesterfield Derbyshire, who attempted to join the Army Service Corps in 1915, but was later “Discharged from the service in consequence of having made a mis-statement as to his age on enlistment.”

He was born in 1898 and said he was born in 1896, to slip past, but was found out and discharged.

This man is the only “John Brown Marshall” shown on the 1921 Census, where he is working as a Motor Lorry Driver, if he was a Transport Corporal in the Machine Gun Corps, that would be a decent match.
