Originally founded by King George on 4th June 1917, his Birthday, alongside the Order of the British Empire.

This being one of the early badges awarded by King George V, at the time only 50 living people could be bestowed this decoration.

The award is very exclusive, it is still going today but is limited to only 65 living members at any time, and a spot is only freed up on death, those awarded it can add to their name the post nominals CH.

It is usually limited to these days to those who have made their mark in Arts, Science Medicine, or Government.

Sir Elton John, Sir Ian McKellen and Dame Judi Dench and Sir Paul McCartney are some famous current members of the 65.

Very few of these decorations have been produced over the years, currently there has only ever been 382 members in over 100 years.
