On 17 March 1981 the Governor-General of the Solomon Islands Baddeley Devesi instituted the Order of the Solomon Islands. The Order consisted of three separate awards: Star of the Solomon Islands, Cross of the Solomon Islands and Solomon Islands Medal.
Cross of Solomon Islands is the second class of the Order. The Cross was awarded for most conspicuous and outstanding service and is very rare.
