Description

India General Service Medal 1854, bar Hazara 1891, I.G.S. 1895, bar Relief of Chitral, 3305 Bandsman Richard George Blackmore, Seaforth Highlanders, soldier since the age of 14.

 

Richard George Blackmore was practically born into the British Army on 16th December 1865 in Woolwich Kent, his father John Blackmore, was a serving Sergeant in the Royal Horse Artillery and his mother was called Mary.
He was baptised in the St George’s Garrison Church on 17th January 1866.

 

At the age of only 14 years and 2 months old, he attested for service on 25th February 1880 at Fort George he stood at only 1/2 an inch over 5 feet tall.

 

During his over 20 years of army service, he earned both these medals as his sole entitlement.

 

Discharged at Fort George following his completion of 22 years of service on 13th February 1902 he held the rank of Bandsman.

 

IGS 1854 officially script engraved: “3305 Pte R. Blackmore. 2nd Bn Sea Highrs.”
IGS 1895 officially script engraved: “3305 Bandsman R. Blackmore. 2d Bn Seaforth Highlrs”

 

Medals swing mounted for wear on silk ribbons, general contacting and wear over a long career, suspensions also a bit loose from swinging around as worn during his Bandman’s service.

 

He died in Woolwich, London, during 1930.
