Description

East and Central Africa Medal, bar Uganda 1897-98, unnamed as issued.

The medal is not a specimen but an unnamed example with no signs of erasure, some evidence of having been worn, contact mark and polishing.

Unnamed examples of this medal, specifically bearing the Uganda 1897-98 clasp tend to show up unnamed but exhibiting signs of being worn on service.

Before the arrival of the Indian Contingent there were locally employed Soldiers fighting in the region, however they do not appear to have ever received Officially Named medals with the clasp “Uganda 1897-98”, suggesting that the clearly worn unnamed issues were issued to the “Native” recipients of the region such as the Uganda Rifles.

They did however receive named medals with other clasps, a similar trend of issuing unnamed medal occured with the “Central Africa” medal around this time.

This clasp was authorised for those who took part in: “An expedition into the Teita country of Uganda, 20 July 1897 to 19 March 1898, under Lieut Colonel W.A. Broome.”
