Egypt Medal, undated, bar Gemaizah 1888, 2380 Sergeant Herbert Charles Knight, 2nd King’s Own Scottish Borderers, died on service in Punjab during 1892. With copy service papers.

 

Officially engraved: “2380 Sergt H. Knight. 2/K.O.S. Bord:”

The announcement of his death back home in Beverley, Yorkshire, the Beverley Echo, 16th Aug 1892:

 

“KNIGHT – At Fort Lahore, Punjab, India, on the 9th July, aged 31 years, Sergeant Herbert Charles Knight, 2nd Battalion K.O.S. Borderers, Son of the late Philip H. Knight, Chief Constable of Beverley”

 

Herbert Charles Knight was born in Bottisham, New Market, Cambridgeshire during 1861.
Most of his life was spent in Yorkshire, where his father, Philip Henry Knight known as “Henry” was Chief Constable of the entire Beverley Police Force, being a well regarded Policeman.

 

At the age of 18, having worked as a Butcher, he signed up locally at Kingston upon Hull for the Army on 25th July 1879.

 

He requested to join the 6th Infantry Brigade, and became a member of the King’s Own Scottish Borderers.

 

Like his father it would seem he was also quite remarkable, he wasted no time in gaining a promotion to Corporal, coming barely 6 months later on 19th July 1880.

 

Promoted to Sergeant on 13th July 1885.

 

He saw the following overseas service:

Egypt, 19th July 1888 – 2nd December 1888
East Soudan, 3rd Dec 1888 – 31st Dec 1888
Egypt, 1st Jan 1889 – 14th December 1889
Home, 15th Dec 1889 – 11th November 1891
East Indies, 12th November 1891 – 10th July 1892.

 

Campaigns Fought: “Suakin 1888, Action of Gemaizah”

 

Having done his 12 years terms of engagement, he chose to continue on and go for 21 years on 27th June 1891.

 

His papers not he died at Fore Lahore of Heat Apoplexy on 10th July 1892.
