Charles Dalton Finch was born during 1862 in Kingston, Leicester, Leicestershire. He attested for service with the 5th Royal Irish Lancers on 9th July 1880 aged 18.
He deserted from service on 20th October 1882 and was found to have fraudulently enlisted with the 10th Hussars, forfeiting his former service.
Following his service in the Egypt and Sudan war, taking part in the campaign at Suakin during 1885, he served for 5 years in India from 1888 to 1894, returning home on 29th April 1894.
Discharged from service on 4th January 1895 having served 12 years.
