Ghuznee Medal, 23rd July 1839, Private James Fletcher 16th XVI Queen’s Lancers, confirmed with full service records, from Leeds, served 1833 to 1849.

 

With full copy service records, including copies of his original attestation sheets.

 

Contemporarily engraved on reverse in decorative style: “James Fletcher XVI Queen’s Lancers.”

 

Original hinged suspension, old silk ribbon, attractive tone and well preserved given his further cavalry service.

 

Served at the Storming of the fort at Ghuznee, but left India before the Lancers fought at Maharajpoor, so this is his sole entitlement, services with the regiment in the Afghanistan War confirmed on service records.

 

According to his service records, he served for 16 years and 168 days with the 16th Lancers, of which he spent over 8 years overseas in India.

 

Served: “East Indies from 3rd November 1834 to 4th February 1843, served throughout the Campaign in Afghanistan in 1838/9”.

 

Discharged with a “Fracture of left thigh bone and impairment of mental faculties.”

 

His service “Has been that of a Very Good and Efficient Soldier, seldom in the Hospital, Trustworthy and Sober.”

 

Surgeons report on medical discharge:

 

“Private James Fletcher, aged 35 years and 10 months, with 16 years 5 months of service, an Englishman and Clothier by trade, had his left thigh bone fractured on occasion by being thrown from this horse when he was riding in the school at Brighton, on the 9th August 1947.
There is slight shortening of the limb, which together with impairment of his mental faculties, as evinced by his conduct, in my opinion render him as unfit for the performance of military duty, his conduct whilst in Hospital has been troublesome, which may be attributed to immobility
