India General Service Medal, VR, bar Relief of Chitral 1895, 5263 Pte William Joseph Cock, 1st Bn Rifle Brigade, Boer War Veteran and served in 4 expeditions in India. Officially engraved in running script: “5243 Pte W.J. Cock 1st Bn K. Rifle Corps.” 

 

Born William Joseph Cox, served under the Alias of William Joseph Cock, when he earned this medal. With copy service papers. 

 

Campaigns: Hazara 1891, Miranzai 1891, Isazai Expedition 1892, Chitral Relief Force 1895. Entitled to IGS 1854, 2 bars, Hazara 1891, Samana 1891, this medal and a QSA, bar Relief of Ladysmith. 

 

Served : Home, 27th June 1889 – 24th Nov 1890 India, 25th Nov 1890 – 13th Jan 1897 Home, 14th Jan 1897 – 12th Dec 1899 South Africa, 13th Dec 1899 – 19th June 1900 Home, 20th June 1900 – 20th April 1902

 

Invalided home from South Africa, 1st May 1900, shortly after the successful relief of the Ladysmith Siege. Discharged after 12 years 298 days service.

 

His papers are all stamped with “DECEASED” so looks like he died not long afterwards.
