Confirmed on the medal roll, with service number 3303, which expands further on his services noting he had served:

“Operations With the Central India Field Force Under Major General Sir Hugh Rose K.C.B.”

Edward had come to India following the end of the Crimean War. He had served in Crimea with the 71st H.L.I. the top part of his medal roll stating he had served with the 71st in Crimea between 1st October 1854 and 9th September 1855.

He is later noted on the 1861 Census, his name sometime noted on the musters as “Conley” according to a note by Kevin Asplin. In 1861 the regiment was still in India, stationed at Sealcote, now Sialkot in Pakistan.

During the Central India Campaign those attached to Sir Hugh Rose’s section saw much fighting.

The services of an Officer of the 71st Highland Infantry recall them in action at the following battles:

“Served with the Central India Field Force under Sir Hugh Rose in 1858 and was present at the actions of Koonch and Muttra, battles of Golowlee and the capture of Calpee, subsequent action of Morar and the final capture of Gwalior.”
