Indian Mutiny Medal, 1857-8, Corporal James Gathercole, 1st Bn 20th Regiment of Foot, the East Devonshire Regiment.

 

Officially impressed: “Corpl J. Gathercole. 1st Bn 20th Regt”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll, which notes he earned the Lucknow Clasp for: “Engaged in the operations against Lucknow to 16th March 1858”

 

James Gathercole was a long serving soldier of the 20th Regiment of Foot, was konwn from 1782 until 1881 as the 20th East Devonshire Regiment, and in 1881 became the Lancashire Fusiliers.

 

Following on from the Mutiny, he was then noted with the regiment during 1861, stationed at Gorakhpur in India.

 

He is then again noted during 1871, when stationed at Curragh, Ireland.

 

During the Indian Mutiny, the 20th Foot saw much fighting.
