Korea Medal, UN Korea, 22432733 Private N. Day, Leicestershire Regiment. Who was Wounded in Action in Korea during December 1951. 

 

According to The Times, he was reported as wounded in action during their issue of 31st December 1951.

 

Officially impressed: “22432733 Pte N. Day, R. Leicesters.”

Even over the Christmas, the men had to fight in Korea, the Chinese Forces not appearing to be interested in a Christmas Truce.

 

The 1st Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment saw a busy arrival into Korea.

 

They first embarked at Hong Kong, destined for Korea in October 1951.

 

By 5th November, they took part in the 2nd Battle of Maryang-San, aka the Gunpowder Plot Battle.

 

The young and inexperienced soldiers of the Leicesters fought well and returned home in August 1952 to Leicester, where they marched through the city streets with their bayonets and colours, on this occasion the County presented to the regiment a Fanfare of Trumpets to mark their appreciation of their fine record in Korea.

 

In less than a year of fighting, the received many casualties, Private Day becoming one of about 120 men to be wounded, with another 30-40 men killed in action.

 

The Times, 31st December 1951 recalls:

 

“CASUALTIES IN KOREA

The following casualties incurred in action in Korea have been notified to the War Office:-

 

ROYAL LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT – Died of Wounds, Corporal N. Fenemer.

Wounded in Action – Ptes A.H. Lewis, B. Cauldwell, N. Day, D. Proctor-Brow, L/CPl J. Tyler, Pte S.A.C Wray.”

Followed by the announcement of extra wounds to the Welch Regiment.
