Military Cross, GV, 1914-15 Star Trio, Captain William Shairp,
Military Cross first announced in the London Gazette, 4th February 1918, with Citation to follow on 5th July 1918.
It reads, Temporary 2nd Lieutenant William Shairp, L.C.
“For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He saved the life of another officer by his coolness and resource and handled his men with great skill in a difficult situation.”
1914-15 Star impressed: “3009 Pte W. Shairp. Cam’n Highrs”

William Shairp first entered the war on 20th February 1915 in France, as a Private with the Cameron Highlanders, following a stint with the Royal Army Service Corps, he would earn a commission with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders as a Lieutenant, later becoming a Captain.
He was born during 1888 in Oban, Argyllshire, Scotland to Alexander Shairp an Estate Agent and Architect, and Marianne Shairp.
He lived at Craigdhu Villa, Kilmore and Kilbride, Argyllshire.
