Scarce to the Seaforth Highlanders, whose Militiamen had a more adventurous service during the Boer War, having spent 18 months on service in Egypt, earning the regiment known as the “Highland Rifle Militia” the battle honour of “Mediterranean 1901-02”.

Mr John M. MacLennan was born in the small parish of Fodderty, near Dingwall in Ross and Comarty, Scotland circa 1876.

Working as a Valet, he joined the 3rd Militia Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders on 7th September 1899 at the age of 23 singing up at Fort George in Inverness.

Previously he stated that he had seen Army service with the regiment but found that the life was not for him, noting that he had seen previous full time service with the regular Seaforth Highlanders “Near 4 months service, Paid £10 on or about 30th May 1898.”

He was present for the Annual Training during 1899.

Embarked for Egypt on 14th February 1900.

Whilst in Egypt, he was appointed as a Lance Corporal on 19th May 1900, being raised to Paid Lance Corporal on 1st June 1900.

Disembarked at Southampton on 10th June 1901.

It looks like he returned back home afterwards to Fodderty, a death of a John Maclennan born in 1877 and died in 1928 is recorded in Fodderty.
