Mercantile Marine War Medal, Alfred Johansson, A Swedish Sailor from the town of Gothenburg, Sweden.

Alfred Johansson was born in Gothenburg, Sweden on 2nd January 1871.

Scarce to a Swede.

Unique name on the medal rolls.

According to post war Merchant Navy Records stamp dated 13th September 1933.

Alfred Johanson of Sweden, Able Seaman, born on 2.1.1871, was a member of the National Union of Seafarers, No 78586, employed out of Canning Town. He stood at 5 foot 9 inches tall, with Brown Eyes, Fair Hair and a Fresh Complexion.

A note on his records reads that he had to get his service book re-issued on 3rd May 1941 “reported lost by enemy action”

This appears to be him mentioned in the Morpeth Herald, 9th Feb 1912:

“Alfred Johansson, a Swede Carpenter on the Steamer Ring, lying in the river Blyth. Fell down the hold on Monday night and fractured his right leg. He was removed to the Knight Memorial Hospital, Blyth.
