A very rare modern Naval M.S.M. Group which is hardly ever awarded since it was re-introduced from 1st December 1977 as a reward for men and women of substantive rank of Petty Officer, holding the L.S. and G.C. medal who have completed 27 years of service. They must also have performed “Good, faithful, valuable and Meritorious service.” with an unbroken Very Good conduct on their records. No more than 59 of these medals could be issued annually.

HMS Adamant which he was on board when he earned his Long Service medal, was a Submarine Depot Ship with the 3rd and later 2nd Submarine Squadron. It was in use from its commission in 1942 until 1966, with on-board facilities including a foundry, light and heavy machine shops, electrical and torpedo repair shops, and equipment to support fitters, pattern makers, copper smiths and shipwrights.
