Queen’s South Africa Medal, 4 bars, Cape Colony, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen, 4434 Pte William Bertram “Bert” Cutting, 10th Royal Hussars and 20th Hussars, died just after he was discharged late 1902, medal unworn.

 

Officially impressed: “4434 Pte. W. B. Cutting, 10th Hussars”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll, issued on 11th April 1902 shortly before his death.

 

Has a set of copy service papers filed under his previous 20th Hussars service number “3291”.

 

William Bertram or “Bert” Cutting was a former veteran of the 20th Hussars remobilised for the Boer War, as his old regiment was not chosen to deploy at the beginning, he was assigned to the 10th Hussars and posted to South Africa.
He returned home and was discharged from the Army in October 1902, but died around the same time in Norfolk.

 

The medal was issued in April 1902, a few months before his death so he had no chance to wear it.

 

William Bertram Cutting, born in South Stoneham, Southampton, Hampshire.

 

Enlisted as soon as he turned 18 at Aldershot on 28th October 1890 for the 20th Hussars.

 

He saw the following service:
Home, 21st October 1890 – 10th September 1895
India, 11th September 1895 – 30th October 1898
Home, 31st October 1898 – 31st October 1898
Army Reserve, 1st November 1898 – 17th January 1900
Home, 18th January 1900 – 10th March 1900. Joined the 10th Hussars on recall from the reserve.
South Africa, 11th March 1900 – 6th October 1901
Home, 7th October 1901 – 30th October 1902.

 


Did his 8 years with the “Colours” before joining the Army Reserve on 1st November 1898.

 

Recalled by Special Army Order of 20th December 1899.

 

Posted for service with the 10th Hussars 18th January 1900.

 

Returned home on 7th October 1901, discharged on 20th October 1902.

 

He died right after discharge in December 1902.
