Queen’s South Africa, 2 bars, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, 5856 Private H. Green, 1st Bn Essex Regiment.

 

Officially impressed: “5856 Pte H. Green, 1st Essex Regt”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll for medal and both clasps.

 

Henry Green was a local Militiaman, he had been born in Buckhurst Hill in Woodford, Essex.

 

At 18 he signed up with the local 3rd Militia Battalion of the Essex Regiment on 10th February 1896.

 

On 15th November 1901, he chose to joined the full time 1st battalion of the Essex Regiment.

 

After returning home in 1902, he was arrested and tried in the local courts, it was determined that he and another man had smashed up a machine, and he was locked up for 2 weeks in H.M. Prison Brentwood.

17th April 1902: “Convicted by Civil Powers for wilful damage and sentenced to 14 days of hard labour, loses pay and service for that period.”

 

He also fought with the 2nd Essex Regiment in WW1 as well.

 

On 6th October 1915, in the field in France, he was tried for 1. Being Drunk when proceeding to the trenches when on active service and 2. Reporting sick without a cause.

During his service he received a Gun Shot wound to his left thigh on 2nd May 1915, which led to his invaliding home for a few months.
