Queen’s South Africa Medal, 4 Bars, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Johannesburg, Belfast, 1196 Pte John Hall, 1st Bn Gordon Highlanders, from Forgue, Huntly, Aberdeenshire.

 

Officially impressed: “1196 Pte J. Hall, Gordon Highrs:”

 

Entitlement to the 4 clasps confirmed on the roll.

 

John Hall was born in the small town of Forgue, near Huntly, Aberdeenshire circa 1865.

 

Having been a Farm Servant, aged 18 he signed up for service at Aberdeen on 31st October 1883 with the Gordon Highlanders.
He had already been a serving member of the local 3rd Bn Gordon Highlanders Militia.

 

He saw the following service:

 

Home, 31st Oct 1883 – 20th September 1885
Malta, 21st September 1885 – 13th Nov 1888
Ceylon, 14th Nov 1888 – 10th Apr 1891
Home, 11th April 1891 – 30th October 1895
Discharged after 12 years, but rejoined the Army Reserve in case his service was needed.

 

A few years later, his services were once again required for the Boer War, he came out of retirement to fight from the Army Reserve in South Africa.

 

He rejoined the colours on mobilisation on 13th February 1900, being posted with 1st Battalion to war.

 

He saw service there from 28th February 1900 until 1st April 1901.
