Queen’s South Africa Medal, 5 bars, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, 5701 Pte J. Gains, 1st Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. 

 

Officially impressed: “5701 Pte J. Gains Yorkshire Regt”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll.

 

A particularly good example with 5 “Battle” Clasps having seen significant fighting have gone through the Relief of Kimberley Campaign (15th February 1900), he fought at the Battles of Paardeberg (18-27th Feb 1900), Driefontein (10 March 1900), Johannesburg (aka Doornkop 29th May 1900), and finally Diamond Hill (11-12th June 1900).

 

Not long after fighting at Diamond Hill, he died soon afterwards at Pretoria on 2nd August 1900.

 

The Army and Navy Gazette 11th August 1900 noted that he had died on the 2nd August 1900 of Enteric Fever.
