Description

Queen’s South Africa Medal, bar Belmont, 4755 Pte Frederick Palmer, 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. A Leicester local from Hinckley, mobilised from the Militia Reserve for the Boer War.

 

Officially impressed: “4755 PTE F. PALMER 1: LEIC: REGt” Some wear and 2 edge knocks to rim, ghost dates visible on reverse.

 

An early issue of the QSA with large style impressed naming and visible ghost dates, later earned the Cape Colony clasp for further service with 3rd Leic Regt but this likely sent loose later and not attached to medal.

 

Leicester Evening Mail, 28th March 1947:

 

“HINCKLEY VETERAN’S DEATH –
The death has occurred at his home in Stockwell Head, Hinkcley, at the age of 72 of Mr Frederick palmer, a veteran of the Boer War.

 

Mr Palmer served with the Leicestershire Militia, and was also on active service in the 1914-18 war with the Leicestershires.
He was a General Dealer and was a familiar figure with his pony and dray.
He leaves one son, Mr S.J. Palmer of Leicester.”

 

Frederick Palmer, born during 1875 in Hinckley, Leicestershire, who remained there during his life and later died in Hinckley during 1947.

 

At the age of 18, having worked as a Carter, he signed up for service locally with the 3rd Battalion Leicester Regiment on 2nd March 1893.

 

Discharged to the Militia Reserve on 23rd June 1896. Re-engaging with the Militia on 11th July 1898.

 

With the outbreak of the Boer War he was mobilised for war service:
