Queen’s South Africa, 2 bars, Modder River, Wittebergen, 3340 Pte P. Kelly, 1st Battalion Highland Light Infantry. 

 

An interesting early issue of the medal with large style impressed naming and visible ghost dates on the reverse.

 

Officially impressed: “3340 Pte P. Kelly. 1: High: Lt Infy”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll. With copy service papers.

 

After the close of the war, at Cairo Egypt during 1903, a submission was sent in for the South Africa 1901 dated clasp on a later roll, these were issued loose if at all and were not always taken to be fixed to the medal.

 

Patrick Kelly, was born in Barony, City of Glasgow, Lanarkshire.

 

Signed up on 2nd August 1889 as a 19 year old labourer with the HLI.

 

He saw the following postings, having been brought back from the Army Reserves to fight in the Boer War early on:

 

Home, 2nd August 1889 – 11th Nov 1890

East Indies, 12th Nov 1890 – 5th March 1897

Home, 6th March 1897 – 22nd Oct 1899

South Africa, 23rd Oct 1899 – 9th April 1901

Home, 10th April 1901 – 4th April 1902.

 

His father Thomas, lived at 110 Douglas Street in Glasgow.
