Queen’s South Africa Medal, bar Natal, Mr L. Tomlin, Army Service Corps, a Civilian Clerk in Army Service.
Officially impressed: “Mr. L. Tomlin. A.S.C.” Some traces of lacquer.
Confirmed on the medal roll under “Civilian Clerks, Army Service” with the rank of Clerk.
Only a small number of the Clerks were entitled to the Natal bar.
Lewis Gilbert Tomlin, was born in Kennington, London circa 1848.
He worked as a Clerk and Draughtsman in the City of London for many years.
At some point he came to South Africa, during the war he was about 52 years old so took up his typical civilian work as a Draughtsman becoming an Army Service Corps Clerk.
After the war he was living at 92 Plein Street, Hillbrow, Johannesburg when he died on 13th July 1905, his occupation listed as Draughtsman.
