Alfred Robert Thomas Murrell was born during 1878 in Mile End Old Town, London, later lived in Romford Essex where he was married and died in Brentwood, Essex during 1976 at the age of 98 years old.

He was one of the first draft of men from the C.I.V. to be posted for service in the Boer War, part of the roll formed in The Graphic, 3rd November 1900, showing the first contingent of the unit.

From his time in the war, he donated a souvenir: a 1 shilling kruger piece now held in the London Metropolitan Archives, City Imperial Volunteers Section.
