Description

Sudan Medal, Khedive’s Sudan, 2 bars, Atbara, Khartoum, 2759 Private Samuel Edward Coppen, Cameron Highlanders, who died in Egypt on 11th October 1898.

 

Sudan officially engraved: “2759 Pte S. Coppen. 1/Cam: Hdrs”
Khedives engraved: “2759 Pte Coppen 1 Cam. Highrs.” minor official correction only to 7 of number.

 

Entitlement to both confirmed on the roll, including both bars to Khedive’s Sudan.

 

Pair in crisp unworn condition as delivered to his father following his death in Egypt.

 

With copy service papers, usually casualties don’t have discharge papers, they are a little faded as they come from the WW1 Burnt papers.

 

Samuel Edward Coppen, was born in St Pancras, London, Middlesex circa 1873.

 

On 30th November 1891 he signed up for the Cameron Highlanders, having previously worked as a Cabinet Maker.

 

He saw the following service:

Malta, 9th April 1892 – 18th Feb 1895
Gibraltar, 19th Feb 1895 – 29th November 1897
Cyprus, 30th Sept 1897 – 9th Jan 1898
Egypt, 10th January 1898 – 11th October 1898

 

His last entry on his papers reads: “Died at the Station Hospital in Cairo, 11.10.98”.
