Description

Turkish Crimea Medal, Sardinian issue, Assistant Surgeon William Wilson Mills, 63rd West Suffolk Regiment of Foot, fought in all 4 battles during the war.

Engraved in good contemporary style: “W. Wilson Mills. Ass. Surgeon 63rd Regt”

Well executed engraving especially given the difficulty of engraving such a thin rimmed medal.

As seen to officers who could spare the expense, the medal is fitted with a well made silver suspension, consisting of a claw with swivelling ring post and attached to a silver suspension bar.

In April 1854 Gentleman William Wilson Mills was first commissioned as an Assistant Surgeon.

He was then posted over to Crimea and joined the 63rd Regiment of Foot.

Following the war, he received the following battle honours according to his army list entry:

“Assistant Surgeon Mills, Served in the Eastern Campaign of 1854-55 including the Battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkermann, the Siege, Assaults and Fall of Sebastopol, expedition to Kertch, Bombardment and Capture of Kinbourn (Medal and Clasps).”

Later in his career he became a Surgeon and then Staff Surgeon.

From later 1856 to 1860s he was stationed in Canada.

The British Army Despatch 30th May 1856 noting that he was on passage to Halifax, the headquarters embarking at Balaklava on 6th May 1856 in the Andres, for Halifax, Nova Scotia, with the following officers, noting Assistant Surgeon Mills among them.

He is shown on the 1861 Army Census as stationed in Canada still.

In 1867 he was appointed as Staff Surgeon to the Staff of the 60th Foot KRRC.
