Waterloo 1815, contemporarily renamed, Private George Watkins, 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, of Lt Col J. Stanhope’s Company. 

 

An original issue of the Waterloo Medal with naming that has been contemporarily renamed, neat hand engraving to read: “George Watkins, 3rd Battn Grenadier Gds”.

 

Entitlement correct on the roll having served at Waterloo in 1815 in the Company of Lieut Colonel the Honourable J. Stanhope, where the 1st Foot Guards became the “Grenadier Guards”.

 

With replacement clip and bar suspension with old ribbon.

 

With copy service papers.

 

George Watkins, was born in the small village of Abbey Dore in Herefordshire circa 1776. 

 

He first enlisted at Hereford, on 19th July 1800 for unlimited service in as they were known at the time as the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards.

 

He would go on to serve a full 21 years 37 days career in the regiment, being discharged on 24th August 1821.

 

He would also be entitled to a further 2 years of service towards his pension for Waterloo service, totalling 23 days 37 days.

 

He was discharged by Surgeon Major Nixon due to “Length of Service”, his conduct stated to have been “Good”.

 

Returning back home to Herefordshire, he died there at the age of 75, being buried on 21st May 1850.
