World War 1 Pair of British War Medal and Victory Medal, Bronze Memorial Plaque, Corporal Henry Ross, 18th Tynside Pioneers Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. 

 

WW1 Pair officially impressed: “18-427 Cpl. H. Ross. North’d Fus.”

Memorial Plaque officially embossed: “HENRY ROSS”

 

Pair is near mint and unworn.

Full entitlement of his WW1 pair from service since 1916 and his Plaque.

Also with a “Northumbrian” collar tag.

 

Corporal Henry Ross, a local born in Rothbury, Northumberland, was killed in action on 13th August 1916, whilst serving with the 18th Bn Noth’d Fusiliers.

 

Son of George and Mary Ann Ross.

 

Husband of Annie Hodgson, of 9 Marlow Streeet, Blyth, Northumberland.

He left behind a Widow and 2 young children, one born in September 1915, just before leaving for France.

 

 

Henry Ross was a member of the local 18th Battalion known as the 1st Tyneside Pioneers, raised by the Lord Mayor and City of Northumberland during October 1914.

 

Henry had enlisted at Newcastle Upon Tyne.

 

They converted to a Pioneer Battalion on 8th Feb 1915, and after further training they finally set off for war.

 

Landing at Le Havre on 8th January 1916, they fought on the infamous Battle of Somme during 1916.

 

On the 1st July 1916 they were involved in the “First Day” of the Battle of the Somme offensive fighting near to La Boiselle.

 

He lived through the fighting, but was soon after was Killed in Action on 13th August 1916.

 

He was buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery at Souchez.

 

He is memorialised on the Netherwitton Memorial Plaque, originally in Netherwitton School and now in St Giles Church.
