Description

Air Force Cross, dated 1942, with 2nd Award Clasp, dated 1946, unnamed as issued, in fitted Royal Mint Case. Attributed to Wing Commander Patrick Vaughan Williams, Chief Test Pilot on Mosquito Production.

 

Medal mounted on original silk ribbon and mounting pin for wear, the ribbon neatly re-stitched upon award of the clasp to slip on the clasp which has been sewn into place.
In a nice condition, original Royal Mint leather titled case.

 

Only 37 second award clasps to the A.F.C. were issued between 1940 & 1947, 26 being from WW2 and 11 from 1946-47.

 

There are exactly 2 men who earned this combination in these years.

 

They are Wing Commander Patrick Vaughan Williams, R.A.F.O., 19177 who earned his AFC in 1942 as a Chief Flying Instructor during the War.
In 1946 he was awarded the bar for his work as Chief Test Pilot of the new De Haviland Mosquito.
