Army Meritorious Service Medal, GV, 5906 Sergeant Albert Edward Williams, 3rd South African Infantry.

 

Officially impressed: “5906 Sjt. A.E. Williams 3/S.A. INF:”

 

With copy WW1 service papers.

 

Awarded in the London Gazette, 17th June 1918.

 

Served with C Company, 3rd Regiment, South African Infantry Reinforcements. the 3rd regiment was later disbanded in early 1918 his papers also remark he was “A Transport Sergeant of a Composite Battalion attached to the 26th Infantry Battalion.

 

Seems to have served mostly during 1916-18, earning the British War and Victory Medal Pair.
Promoted unpaid Lance Corporal, 1/1/1917, Paid Acting Lance Corporal, 20/3/1917, Sergeant 3/7/1917.

 

At one point during mid 1918 shown was “transferred to England for O.T.C. (R.A.F.)” (Officer Training Corps).

 

Shown on his papers as having been Severely Wounded by a gunshot to the arm and shoulder on 8th October 1918, taken in by the 1/3 Northumbrian Field Ambulance and invalided to London where he was treated at Southwark Military Hospital in Dulwich on 16th October 1918.

 

Around this period South African forces were engaged in attempting to recapture Le Cateau
