John Gribby was born in Derbyshire circa 1853.

He first signed on with the Royal Marines at Plymouth during 1871, at the age of 18.

Discharged after his 12 years terms of service during 1883.

John was noted in the Military Deserters register during 1875.

Not long after returning from the Ashantee war where he earned this medal, he deserted his ship, the Vanguard having been found as a “Straggler” on 7th May 1875.

It was found that 11 men from the ship were missing, the mot of them like Gribby were Royal Marines.
