Description

Crimea Medal, 3 bars, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol, 2990 Private Samuel Shervil, 55th Regt of Foot, who died in Dum Dum Bengal during 1865.

Engraved in contemporary unusual gothic style: “2990 S. Shervil. 55th Regiment”

Confirmed on the medal roll for the Alma and Inkermann clasps which notes his medal was delivered “Regt 27.10” meaning it would have been sent as an unnamed example whilst on service on 27th October to the Regiment.

There should be another roll recording the Sebastopol Clasp, although the medal roll is poorly sorted and difficul to read.

Private Shervil, also served in the Bhootan Expedition, but due to his death, his IGS medal was not issued, having been recorded on the roll of medals returned to the mint.

On 12th October 1865, 32 Year old Samuel Shervill, a “Private H.M. 55th Foot.” died of Hepatitis, he was buried on the 13th by Captain Rowland of the 55th.

The 5th regiment of Foot, known as the Westmorland Regiment, later amalgated with the 34th Cumberland Regiment in 1881 to form the Border Regiment.
