Description

Earl St Vincent’s Testimony of Approbation Medal, 1800, fitted with flat silver suspension for wear.

Some overall wear, edge bruising and contact marks through breast wear.

Made from silver, 47mm diameter, struck circa 1800 at the Matthew Boulton Mint, Soho, the design by Conrad Heinrich Kuchler and John Flaxman.

The medal which predates official medals to the Royal Navy had no method for wearing on the breast, commonly seen pierced with rings, this example has had a silver flat bar suspension attached at 12 o’clock, to accommodate an about 40mm wide “Navy” blue ribbon.

An unusual early medal given to members of the crew of Admiral John Jervis, the “Earl St Vincent” who had followed him from his Flagship “Victory” to “Ville de Paris” and remained loyal to him during the mutiny at the Nore during 1797.
