Indian Mutiny Medal, 2 bars, Lucknow, Relief of Lucknow, Private John Crowley 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment, who died in India during the war on 11th July 1858. 

 

Officially impressed: “JOHN CROWLEY, 53rd REGT”

 

A good condition medal overall, due to the posthumous issue.

 

Confirmed on the medal roll.

 

The roll also notes that during the war that he had “Died 11 July 1858”

 

 

During the Indian Mutiny, the 53rd Foot saw much active service.

 

Notably, they earned the 2 clasps for “Relief of Lucknow” and “Lucknow” for the later capture.

 

They started on the path of Relive Lucknow in November 1857.

 

They came back under Sir Colin Campbell for a further campaign to take Lucknow, which started in march 1858.

 

It was ultimately successful after the storming and was captured by 21st March 1858.

 

About 3-4 months after this Private Crowley died.
