New Zealand War Medal, dated 1864 to 1866, 611 Private Thomas Rogers, 68th Durham Light Infantry. Served a full 21 years, 14 overseas. 

 

Officially impressed: “611 Thos Rogers, 68th Lt Infy.”

 

Some contact marking and edge bruise about 9’oclock to obverse from a long career in the Army.

 

Confirmed on the medal roll, with copy service papers.

Thomas Rogers, born in Birmingham, Warwickshire during 1833.

 

Signed up for service during 1858 

 

Saw 20 years 358 days of service, with 14 years 1 month overseas.

Of which, 11 years 8 Months spent in the East Indies.

2 Years 5 months in New Zealand.

 

“His conduct has been very good and he is in possession of four good conduct badges and will be entitled to five good conduct badges on the 2nd March 1879, he is in possession of the New Zealand War Medal, also the Long Service and Good Conduct.”

 

“His name has never been entered in the defaulter’s book, He has never been tried by Court Martial.”

 

Signed up with the 84th Foot on 2nd March 1858, for 6 months until 31st August 1858.

Transferred to the 68th Foot on 31st August 1858.

 

Served with the 68th all the way to 22nd February 1879 when he was discharged, total service including his 10 days finalising discharge 21 years 3 days.

 

Although he had a flawless record, he never appeared to want any advancement through the ranks.

 

With his retirement, he chose to settle in Sunderland, Durham, home of the 68th LI.
