Queen’s South Africa, 6 bars, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast, King’s South Africa, 2 bars, SA 1901 & SA 1902, 3340 Private Arthur Meader, 10th Royal Hussars, who saw significant fighting during the war. 

 

QSA officially impressed: “3340 Pte A. Meader, 10th Hussars”

KSA officially impressed: “3340 Pte A. Meader. 10/Hrs”

 

All confirmed on the medal roll, with copy service papers.

 

Alfred Meader, was born in St Pancras, London, Middlesex on 7th December 1874.

 

The son of James and Emma Meader, his father was a Mason, they were a large family living at Tuckers Rents in St Pancras, Alfred having 4 brothers and 2 sisters.

 

He was a former Chair Maker aged 18 when he signed on with the British Army on 27th March 1894, requesting to join the “Corps of Hussars of the Line”.

 

He was assigned to the 10th Royal Hussars, aka “Prince of Wale’s Own” Hussars.

 

He would see the following postings over a long career lasting 20 years, having remained active in the Army Reserve up until 1914.

 

Home, 27th March 1894 – 4th November 1899

South Africa (Boer War Service), 5th November 1899 – 3rd October 1902

Home, 4th October 1902 – 28th Dec 1902

Army Reserve, 29th Dec 1902 – 26th March 1914.

 

 

 

The 1939 Census lists him living with his wife Alice in Camberwell, Southwark, London, where he worked as a “Jobbing Bricklayer”.

 

He died in Hackney, London, during 1953.
