Herbert John Scott was born during 1878 in Christ Church, Southport, Lancashire.

Son of Herbert William Scott.

He first joined the East Lancs on 7th April 1896 aged 18 working as a Baker.

Joining up from the 7th Militia of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps.

He saw the following postings: Home, 7th April 1896 – 12th Jan 1900

South Africa, 13th Jan 1900 – 24th Nov 1902

Home, 25th Nov 1902 – 10th Sept 1903.

He was now in the reserves and not far from ending his service naturally at the end of 12 years, but for some reason he chose to take an early discharge from the Army Reserve after paying £18 on 10th September 1903.

After leaving the Army, he returned to food as his profession. Later in 1921, he was living in Crayford, Kent with his wife Louie, where he worked as a Caterer, and his wife as his assistant. He was also a member of the Freemasons in Crayford at the time.

In 1923 he was subject to a robbery but got justice, recalled in the Kent Messenger on 20th October 1923. “CRAYFORD CIGARETTES; William John Tegg, 34, Fitter, pleaded guilty to breaking into the shop at Crayford, on August 21st, and stealing a large quantity of cigarettes, etc. Mr Fletcher prosecuted and prisoners total convictions numbered 14. Prisoner said he was not the only one in the robbery. The Chairman: That doesn’t make you less guilty. Prisoner: But I dont see why I should go down with the lot. He was sentenced to 12 months hard labour.”
