Queen’s South Africa, 3 bars, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, King’s South Africa, 2 bars, 5351 Private Harry Brown, Wiltshire Regiment. A Local man from Swindon, Wilts.

 

Both officially impressed: “5351 Pte H. Brown. Wilts: Regt.”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll and papers.

 

With copy service papers.

 

Harry Brown was born in the parish of Christ Church, Swindon, Wiltshire circa 1878.
He was technically born in Broome, and raised in the town of Wroughton.
Son of James Brown and Jemima (Haines).

 


Service:
Home, 24th July 1899 – 27th June 1900
South Africa, 26th June 1900 -17th November 1902, 2 years 143 days.
India, 18th November 1902 – 7th Dec 1903
Home (Invalided back), 8th December 1903 – 19th January 1904.

 

Attested 24th July 1899 for service with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Wiltshire Regiment.

 

After being invalided back home from India, he was assessed and discharged at Netley.

 

“Having been found medically unfit for further service”.

 

His conduct was said to have been “Very Good”.

 


Discharged as medically unfit, 19th January 1904.

 

Intended place of residence: “Warleigh Lodge, Wroughton, Wiltshire.”

 

Later in life he appears on the 1939 Census as born on 13th June 1878, working as a Caretaker (Private) living in Mere and Tisbury.

 

He died shortly afterwards in October 1940 in Salisbury, Wiltshire.
