Queen’s South Africa Medal, bar Talana, Private William Paul Harvey, Dundee Town Guard, who died at Dundee during 1901 aged only 19. Rare and unusual to a Town Guard. 

 

Officially impressed: “W.P. Harvey. Dundee Tn: Gd;”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll.

 

A scarce early Battle clasp earned for the Battle of Talana Hill, aka Battle of Glencoe, fought on the 20th October 1899.

 

While most Town Guards remained in their town, the Dundee Town Guard made themselves a notable exception, when their own region became the subject of the “Battle of Talana”.

 

William Paul Harvey was born circa 1882.

 

In civilian life before he took up arms to protect his town from the Boers he worked as a Mason.

 

During the war, he died at Dundee on 31st May 1901 of Pulmonary Phthisis.

 

His estate was settled by his brother Thomas John Harvey, a building contractor.
