Queen’s South Africa, 2 bars, Cape Colony. Orange Free State, 2653 Private R. Henderson, 3rd Militia Battalion Scot Rifles, Scottish Rifles aka The Cameronians.

Officially impressed: “2653 Pte R. Henderson, Scot: Rifles”

Confirmed on the medal roll, a further roll notes entitlement to the 1901 and 1902 dated bars to be sent later.

During the Boer War, the 1st and 2nd Battalion Scottish Rifles were sent to South Africa early into the war.

The 3rd Battalion was one of 2 Militia Battalions had been raised from the 2nd Royal Lanarkshire Militia.

The 3rd Battalion Scottish Rifles, with whom Private Henderson served with, was embodied in May 1900 for active service. More than 600 men embarked for South Africa in April 1901, and returned home in June 1902 after the end of the war.
