Description

Queen’s South Africa Medal, 5 bars, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, SA 1901, SA 1902, 2206 Private A. Ogden, 2nd Bn Lincolnshire Regiment.

 

Officially Engraved in attractive style: “2206 Pte A. Ogden. 2/Linc Regt.”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll, issued with all 5 bars, the roll recording: “Medal and 5 Clasps issued 14.3.04”

 

However a curious remark also reads: “CONVICTED UNDER SECTION 17 ARMY ACT.”

 

An entry in the Court Martial Registers, recalled that on 16th January 1901 at Vereeniging a Field General Court Martial was held by the GOC Pretoria, Ogden was at the time holding the rank of Sergeant.

 

“Section 18(5) an offence of a fraudulent nature, obtaining a bottle of brandy by false pretences from the Hospital Stores at Vereeniging.”

 

He was reduced to the ranks on 16th January 1901 and confined by “M. General Barton”
