Queen’s South Africa, 3 bars, Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, 5541 Pte Robert Kendall, Yorkshire Regiment.

Officially impressed: “5541 Pte R. Kendall, Yorkshire Regt”

Confirmed on the medal roll. Full entitlement of clasps.

With copy service papers.

The roll notes he was sent “To 2/Yorks Regt, India.”

An unusual combination of these 2 bars, having not earned any further clasps or dated clasps.

This was because he was suffering from Pneumonia, which led to a hospital stay at Netley Hospital from July to September 1900.

South Africa, 24th November 1899 – 28th June 1900, invalided home with Pneumonia.
Home, 29th June 1900 – 14th March 1901
India, 15th March 1901 – 22nd April 1905.

Discharged on completion of his 12 years once he returned home in 1905.

Robert Kendall was born in Plumstead, Kent circa 1879.

He was a Shopman and Greengrocer, aged 18 when he first joined the Army in 1897.
He was an active member of the Royal West Kent Regt Militia at the time.

There are many entries in his papers from the Regimental Defaulters Book, he seems to have gone missing and been late on many occasions, he seems to have been very consistent about being either missing, late, rude, violent or drunk.

Some entries include: 28th December 1900, Absent from Tattoo until he was apprehended by the Military Police in Town.
Another charge was tacked on for being Drunk at 10.20pm, and another for “Striking the Military police.”

Having a Rusty Bayonet, 5 days confinement.
Disobedience of Camp Orders, 7 days Confinement
Not complying with an order, 5 days confinement.
Attempting to obtain liquor from the mess, 7 days confinement.
Found “Drunk in the town about 9.30pm”, 7 days confinement.
