Description

Queen’s South Africa, 2 bars, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, 6709 Sergeant F.C. Martin, 38th Company Army Service Corps. Died of disease on 10th May 1900 at Bloemfontein.

 

His wife Anne was pregnant with his son when he left for South Africa, and was born 3 months before his death from Typhoid.

 

Officially impressed: “6709 Sejt F.C. Martin A.S.C.”

Initial “F” has been officially corrected, otherwise excellent untouched condition as issued.

 

Dark toning as posthumous issue, ghost dates to reverse.

 

Confirmed on the medal roll, which notes he died on 10.5.1900.

 

Frederick Charles Martin, was a long serving member of the Army Service Corps.

 

He had first signed up on 27th February 1886 back when they were known as the Commissariat and Transport Corps.

 

An 18 Year old Baker, who had been 3.5 years an apprentice, whilst serving in the 3rd Militia Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.

 

Promoted Lance Corporal, 6th August 1891, 2nd Corporal, 1st September 1892, Corporal, 12th December 1894.

 

On 25th June 1895, extended his service to finish 21 years.

 

Appointed Lance Sergeant on 19th September 1899, then Sergeant on 28th September 1899.

 

He landed in South Africa as a freshly promoted Sergeant on 21st October 1899.
