Frederick James Russell was born circa 1869 in Daventry, Northamptonshire. The son of John and Mary, his sister noted as Florence.

First Attested for service aged 18 on 2nd November 1887 with the 19th Princess of Wales’s Own Hussars.

He saw the following over his 12 years service, before the Boer War:

Home, 2nd Nov 1887 – 31st Aug 1891.

East Indies, 1st Sept 1891 – 2nd Dec 1895

Home, 3rd December 1895 – 1st November 1899.

“Re-enlisted for Section D on 14th November 1899 for 4 years from 14th November 1899”.

It looks like he was remobilised to fight in the Boer War having barely signed on for the Army Reserve by that point.
