Queen’s South Africa, 3 bars, Cape Colony, SA 1901, SA 1902, 758 Sergeant Isaac John Hart, East Surrey Regiment, 3rd Militia Battalion. 

 

Officially impressed: “758 Sgt J. Hart. E. Surrey Regt”.

 

Confirmed on the medal roll, for the QSA with Cape Colony and the further 2 dated clasps.

 

The medal is named “J” which was his middle name, probably named this way due to the closeness between I and J when written in script from the original medal rolls.

 

With Militia service records.

 

 

Isaac John Hart, was born in Lambeth, London, Surrey circa 1879.

 

He attested with the local Militia, the 3rd Bn East Surrey Regiment on 22nd November 1898 aged 19, working as a Carpenter

 

With the outbreak of the Boer War, he was embodied on 12th May 1900, and joined the Special Service Section on 2th August 1900.

 

Promoted to Corporal on 20th June 1900 and then Sergeant on 5th July 1901.

 

“Served in South Africa with Battalion from 25th June 1901 – 25th July 1902.

Certified that this man was in receipt of missing a allowance and that he has been paid his War Gratuity.”

 

He was discharged, Time Expired as a Sergeant on 21st November 1904.

 

During WW1, he found some further use for his services.

 

He joined the 1st Bn East Kents as P/19503 initially, before joining the Royal Flying Corps on 16th March 1917.

 

As he was listed as a “Carpenter & Joiner” in civilian life, he joined the R.F.C. first as a 2nd Airman, rising up to 1st Airman, Acting Corporal, before transferring to the new RAF on 1st April 1918 as Air Mechanic 1st Class, reaching Corporal Mechanic on 30th September 1918.
