Queen’s South Africa, 3 bars, CC, OFS, Transvaal, 29701 Pte Andrew Sutherland, 14th (Northumberland) Company 5th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. 

 

 

Officially impressed: “29701 Pte A. Sutherland 14th Coy Imp Yeo”

 

The rank of Pte is readable but there is some attempted erasure.

 

Confirmed on the medal roll. Also earned the dated pair of 1901 & 1902 clasps usually issued loose later.

Andrew Sutherland was born circa 1878 in Forres, Scotland.

 

3 years an Apprentice Joiner with his father Alexander Sutherland, being aged 23 when he signed up with the Imperial Yeomanry at Newcastle on Tyne on 7th February 1901.

 

Served in South Africa form 15th March 1901 until 8th September 1902.

 

He was discharged fully “At his own request’ on 19th September 1902.

 

He appears to have taken a liking to South Africa, as after the war was over he took his discharge on 15th July 1902 at Elandsfontein, noting it was at his “Own request to take up Civil Employment in Johannesburg”, he was a trained Joiner who had “Very Good” conduct.
