Queen’s South Africa, 2 bars, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, 1692 Private James Mears, 3rd Militia Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. 18 Year old Militiaman Mobilised for service. 

 

Officially impressed: “1692 Pte J. Mears. E. Surrey Regt.”

 

Claw and suspension a little loose through wearing.

 

With copy Militia service records. Confirmed on the medal roll, also got the 1901 and 1902 dated clasps issued after the medal.

 

James Mears was born in Kilburn, London, Middlesex during 1882.

 

At the age of 18 he signed up with his local Militia, whilst working as a Painter on 19th April 1900.

 

His service records note that he was:

 

Embodied for service 7th June 1900 – Disembodied 15th October 1900.

 

Then Embodied for Active in South Africa where he was from 5th June 1901 to 26th July 1902.

 

“Certified that this man was in receipt of Messing Allowance and that he has been paid his SA War Gratuity.”

 

Following his return home he remained with the Militia for the rest of his service, being present in the yearly training during 1903 and 1904, before being absent in 1905.
