Queen’s South Africa, 3 bars, Natal, Transvaal, Orange Free State, Orderly Henry Chowles, Imperial Hospital Corps.

 

Officially impressed: “Orderly H. Chowles. Imp: Hosp: Corps.”

 

Confirmed on the medal roll. Some slight marking to back of Transvaal clasp.

 

Henry actually joined and was discharged from the I.H.C. on at least 3 separate occasions during the war.

 

He first joined up on 3rd April 1900, before being discharged right after on 23rd May 1900 for being “Drunk & (hard to read but looks like Absent)”

 

So he rejoined on 8th February 1901, being discharged following the end of his service on 6th August 1901.

 

He did his 3rd term joining on 19th August 1901 until discharged at the end of his service on 24th February 1902.

 

 

Henry was born circa 1858, and was in his 40s during the Boer War, according to his enlistment records, 42 year old Henry Chowles was one time a Painter on enlistment and another time a Baker.

 

He was 140 lbs, 33-34 inch chest, Blue eys and dark hair, 5 foot 7 inches tall, his next of kin noted as his Brother A. Chowles, of 14 Dorset Street, Capetown.

 

He stated that by 20th August 1901, on his third enlistment he had seen 186 days service with the IHC already.
